Yep once you get the basic spear upgrade they become very serviceable indeed.
I just retreated the axe warriors back and did it all again the next time!Īnd like Wis2worked - I think the best mid/late force is a center of Nordic Warriors or Spearmen (the Saxons have great spearmen) flanked with axes. Because the Nordic band have such bad morale they almost instantaneously broke each time allowing 100 easy kills or so. I had one unit of axe warriors on each flank slighty behind the spearmen so they didn't get engaged and then just smashed them into the flank Nordic bands time and time again. They were charged by the hordes of Nordic Bands (I know.they're trash but that's why its funny). Tried Huscarls or Royal Huscarls for the Jutes yet? They WRECK everything they touch.Īll axe units are vicious though - I just had a battle where I was outnumbered 5200/2100 men and won - mainly because my Nordic Axe Warriors got 500 kills each (well one unit got 482 the other got 510 odd)! How? Had a line of Nordic Spearmen in shield wall. Overall, my "standard" norse campaign infantry line is ~~ 6 swords, 2 spears, 2-4 axes I personally found it valuable to reduce exaustion ratio via tech and general traits, as axes seem to exaust much faster (espacially 2handed Housecarls) than Spears/Swords in the same tier. Other axe troops I use in somewhat quantities of 4, also on the flanks 2 squads each, protected by one spear unit though you can use them as frontline infantry if you lack some good swords atm. They are expensive as hell in upkeep for early/mid but they hell do their job and I just use 2 of them in my fullstacks and they off course wait behind, and later on swing around the flanks and crush into the back of engaged and tired enemy blobs, they are BAWS! (2013) Warrior-women in Viking Age Scandinavia. The amazing thing about them is you recieve them by teching civil (the fortress which enables champions). My favorite axes are the Housecarls of the Jutes.
